The three magazines that i regularly read are “Sky News“, “Astronomy Magazine” and “Sky and Telescope“. This isn’t an endorsement per say of these magazines nor is it in anyway a negative comment on the several other astronomy magazines that can be found on Canadian Magazine racks. I am just sharing the list of what magazines i read.
All three magazines follow roughly the same format. Each has a section on the “sky this month” which includes a sky chart (probably the best ones you’ll find anywhere) and suggestions for what to look for – including unique astronomy events like planet groupings or comets. There are articles on science oriented topics and a section for user submitted astrophotos. And there is usually a review of the latest gadget or telescope. Sky News issues come out every two months while Astronomy and Sky and Telescope are monthly publications.
“Sky News” is a Canadian magazine that comes out every two months. It can be found on most Canadian magazine racks including those in drug stores, and of course the book stores. Their web site is www.skynews.ca
I like “Sky News” because it’s Canadian. Partly just for that reason, but also because there are a few astronomical events each year that are dependent on location – mainly latitude, but sometimes longitude as well. So the magazine provides a regional perspective that is not always included in the US magazines.
The Sky News home page includes tabs for “The Sky This Week” and “Observing the Sky” for suggestions and tips of what to look for. The web site includes more general info on astronomy and equipment. There is also a free weekly news letter – signup for it is on their home page.
“Astronomy Magazine” is a US monthly publication that can be found on most Canadian magazine racks including those in drug stores, and of course the book stores. Their web site is www.astronomy.com/
Their web site offers some of the articles that can be found in the current issue of the magazine and a very thorough section on “Observing” for suggestions on what to look for. Their observing section is conveniently organized by category so you can select the types of things you are interested in. There is also a monthly news letter with the signup at the bottom of their home page.
Sky and Telescope
“Sky and Telescope” magazine is a US monthly publication that can be found on most Canadian magazine racks including those in drug stores, and of course the book stores. Their web site is www.skyandtelescope.com/
Their web site offers a peek at the articles that can be found in the current issue of the magazine. The “Observing” tab has subsections for the sky this week and a monthly view with suggestions of what to look for. There is also a monthly news letter with the signup at the top of their home page.
Sky and Telescope also provides a feature to build your own sky chart. It’s not quite as pretty as the one in the magazine but it does have the advantage of being tailored for a specific time and location and is suitable for printing. There is a link on the left side of their home page about half way down called “Interactive Sky Chart“. Only registered users can access it, but registration is free.
There are several other very good astronomy magazines that are regularly available on Canadian magazine racks. You can find them in the book stores and some specially magazine shops carry them. The grocery stores and drug stores tend to carry just the three i’ve mentioned.
